Fugu

The Japanese pufferfish Fugu rubripes has a very compact genome in comparison with other vertebrate species, only 400 Mb, approximately 7.5 times smaller than the human. The number of genes is similar to that in other vertebrates, but the genes are smaller because their introns are very short. Studies of Fugu genes show that exon-intron organization is mostly conserved as are the transcriptional regulatory sites.
