Figure 1. Schematic representation of the conventional model of pentameric IgM.

This model depicts a single structure in which the heavy chains and the J chain are connected by well defined disulfide bridges involving cysteines in position 125, 92 and 19, located in CH2, CH3 and CHS, respectively. Site directed mutagenesis experiments show that the arrangement of these disulfide bridges varies among and within IgM molecules. (1)
